The Future of Tattoos: AI's Impact on the Industry
The tattoo world is undergoing a revolution, and it's all thanks to AI. While some embrace the technology, others are cautious. But what does this mean for the art of tattooing?
Kerry Gilbert, owner of Tattoo Morningstar in Weymouth, England, has a unique perspective on the matter. She believes AI can be a double-edged sword, offering both advantages and challenges.
"AI designs often need a critical eye," Kerry explains. "It tends to add or omit details, like fingers or toes, which can make the job more complex."
But here's where it gets controversial... Ben Gorman, a computer science expert, sheds light on the limitations of AI. "AI programs like Chat GPT lack human reasoning," he says. "They're trained on vast amounts of data, but their understanding is statistical, not artistic."
Sacha, a regular at Tattoo Morningstar, has experienced AI-designed tattoos firsthand. "I have too many tattoos to count! The ones on my legs and thighs are AI-designed characters. I often pop in during my lunch break for a quick flash tattoo."
Tattoo artists face a common issue: clients often present designs that are too large for the intended area. "A six-inch tattoo might need to be redrawn at 15-20 inches," Kerry says. "Ink spreads, and a small tattoo can turn into a blob if not done at a reasonable size."
And this is the part most people miss... AI struggles with dates and script, according to Kerry. "You have to ensure everything is spelled correctly before it's tattooed."
Gorman elaborates, "AI doesn't work like human reasoning. When an artist paints a dog, they draw on their knowledge and skill. AI, on the other hand, tries to statistically determine what you want based on your prompt."
However, AI isn't all bad news for tattoo artists. It can save time and allow for more detailed, larger pieces. "As a charity-focused studio, we use AI to create small tattoo designs, with proceeds going to Dorset Mind. It's a matter of playing with prompts to get the right design," Kerry adds.
So, is AI the future of tattooing? Gorman believes education is key. "The human element remains crucial. Tattoo artists bring artistry to the skin. By integrating AI, they can focus more on their art, making their work more impactful."
