Beware of This New Scam Targeting the Elderly in NSW: Police Warnings (2026)

Imagine being an elderly person, trusting and kind, only to be targeted by scammers exploiting your goodwill. This is the harsh reality for many seniors in New South Wales, who have fallen victim to a cunning 'car trouble' scam. But here's where it gets even more alarming: police believe this isn't an isolated incident but part of a widespread scheme.

In a recent crackdown, NSW Police have charged two men allegedly behind this devious operation, which has left a trail of victims across the state. The scam works like this: the perpetrators approach elderly individuals, often women, in shopping center car parks, claiming there’s an issue with their vehicle. And this is the part most people miss—while one distracts the victim by suggesting they check under the hood, the other swiftly steals valuables like wallets, cash, and cards from inside the car.

To date, police have recorded 18 such incidents, spanning from Wagga Wagga in the south to Forster on the Mid North Coast. The targeted locations include car parks in Albion Park, Ashfield, Beecroft, Berowra Heights, Double Bay, Forster, Goulburn, Newcastle, Pennant Hills, Penrith, Shellharbour, The Ponds, Tumut, Unanderra, and Wagga Wagga. What’s particularly concerning is the recent surge in the Riverina region, where seven incidents were reported over a single weekend in Wagga Wagga, Tumut, Goulburn, and Yass.

Riverina Police District Commander, Superintendent Andrew Spliet, warns that regional communities, known for their helpful nature, are especially vulnerable. 'Country people are very obliging and like to help others,' he said. 'Unfortunately, some individuals exploit this kindness. We haven’t seen a scam of this scale in our area before.'

The two men, aged 37 and 57, were arrested on the Mid North Coast and charged with a staggering 72 offenses. During the arrest, police found vehicle wires, international passports, $6,000 in cash, and money transfer receipts in their possession. They were denied bail and are set to appear in court today.

But the case isn’t closed yet. Police are now seeking the public’s help to locate two other men believed to be involved in this crime spree. Both are described as Caucasian and in their 40s. If you have any information, you’re urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Here’s the controversial question: Are we doing enough to protect our elderly population from such predatory scams? While law enforcement is taking action, the onus also falls on communities to stay vigilant and educate vulnerable members. What steps do you think should be taken to prevent these crimes? Share your thoughts in the comments below—this is a conversation we all need to have.
