Greenland's Premier Clarifies No Deal with US, Denmark: Focus on Security and Military Presence
In a recent development, Greenland's premier, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has addressed the speculation surrounding a potential deal between the United States and Denmark regarding the island of Greenland. Nielsen has made it clear that there is no agreement in place, contrary to President Trump's announcement.
During a press conference in Nuuk, Nielsen stated, 'I don't know what's in the deal.' This statement comes after President Trump announced a 'framework' for a future deal with Greenland during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos. The president's comments sparked a reaction in the financial markets, with the Nasdaq, S&P 500, and Dow Jones Industrial Average experiencing a surge.
However, Nielsen emphasized that the meeting primarily focused on security and military cooperation. He stated, 'The meeting was about the common goal of enhancing security in our region, which includes increased military presence and exercise activities with US and NATO forces in Greenland.' This clarification highlights the primary objective of the discussions, which is to strengthen security measures rather than address mineral resources or other economic aspects.
President Trump has been exerting pressure on Denmark to transfer ownership of Greenland, describing it as an essential asset for American security. He aims to include Greenland in his Golden Dome missile defense system, as mentioned in an interview with Fox Business's Maria Bartiromo. The president expressed confidence in securing total security and access to military bases and equipment in Greenland.
The White House has not disclosed the details of the proposed deal, but sources indicate that the initial discussions in Davos centered around the military component, including the stationing of American troops and NATO forces on the island. Any negotiations regarding mineral rights and economic matters are expected to be addressed at a later stage.
The US seeks to counter Russian and Chinese economic influence in Greenland, which holds strategic importance in the North Atlantic. A European official revealed that Rutte proposed the idea of Denmark transferring the Pituffik Space Base, a strategically significant installation in northern Greenland, to the US. This base has been under American control since a 1951 defense agreement with Denmark, but the land legally belongs to Denmark.
Trump confirmed that the framework is still under negotiation, with Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff leading the discussions from the American side. He assured that there will be no financial burden on US taxpayers, stating, 'We're not gonna have to pay anything... We're going to have total access to Greenland.'
Nielsen, Greenland's premier, expressed willingness to engage in negotiations but emphasized the importance of mutual respect and Greenland's sovereignty. He stated, 'We choose the kingdom of Denmark, the EU, and NATO. Any infringement on Greenland's sovereignty is a 'red line.'
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also weighed in, stating that Rutte does not represent Denmark in these negotiations. She clarified, 'NATO does not have a mandate to negotiate on behalf of Denmark and Greenland. The discussions have focused on increased NATO engagement in the Arctic region.'
