NBA: Lakers Coach JJ Redick Clarifies Viral Exchange with Luka Doncic, Emphasizes Strong Relationship
Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick recently addressed a viral exchange with star player Luka Doncic, clarifying that despite the heated moment, they maintain a "great relationship." The incident occurred during a game against the Golden State Warriors, where the Lakers were on a three-game losing streak. Doncic, the Slovenian 27-year-old, tried to avoid a fist bump from Redick as he walked to his seat, leading to a brief exchange of words.
Redick, speaking before the team's win over the New Orleans Pelicans, expressed his surprise at the exchange's viral nature, stating, "I don't know why it went viral. It felt very normal to me." He added, "I didn't think much of it at the time. I don't think Luka did either." The pair's interaction, however, sparked curiosity and speculation among fans, with some questioning the nature of their relationship.
Doncic, who had claimed four points and three assists by the time of the exchange, returned to score a game-high 26 points in the Warriors game. The six-time All-Star further solidified his impact by scoring 27 points in the Lakers' subsequent win over the New Orleans Pelicans, helping them secure a third straight victory and maintain their sixth position in the Western Conference standings.
Redick emphasized the strength of their relationship, stating, "He and I have a great relationship. I really value our relationship. And I think those things happen. Not every game, but they happen very frequently." He added, "It's a competition. And there's two guys here who, in this case, are trying to win a basketball game and be on the same page about stuff."
The Lakers' recent success is a testament to their team dynamics, as they navigate the competitive Western Conference. The conference leaders, Oklahoma City Thunder, and the second-placed San Antonio Spurs, both secured wins over the Chicago Bulls and Philadelphia 76ers, respectively. Meanwhile, the Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Pistons suffered a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, while the third-placed New York Knicks capitalized with a win over the Toronto Raptors.
