Blizzard has just made a bold announcement that is sure to shake up the gaming community: Overwatch 2 will be officially rebranded simply as Overwatch. The first of these expansions, titled "The Reign of Talon," is scheduled to debut next week on Tuesday, February 10th.
What’s really making waves is the introduction of not just one, but five new heroes all at once—an unprecedented move in the Overwatch franchise, exceeding even the initial launch of Overwatch 2 by two heroes. Over the course of 2026, players can expect a total of ten new heroes, with an additional five being rolled out across the six seasons of "The Reign of Talon." This constant flow of new characters marks a significant shift in how Blizzard is approaching content delivery for Overwatch.
The latest set of heroes brings a diverse array of abilities and roles to the game:
- Domina is a tank who bears similarities to Zarya, providing formidable defensive capabilities.
- Emre acts as a damage dealer reminiscent of Soldier 76, bringing firepower to the battlefield.
- Mizuki, a support hero equipped with a unique magical healing hat, adds a whimsical touch to healing.

This shift towards a yearly release model has greatly impacted the storytelling aspect of the game. Blizzard is moving away from the previous piecemeal approach and instead crafting an overarching narrative that will develop throughout the year. Six distinct seasons are planned for "The Reign of Talon," which will see the game's seasonal count reset from 20 down to 1, marking a fresh start.
Storytelling in Overwatch will continue to unfold through cinematic videos and animated comics, but now players will have enhanced visibility within the game itself. This means that players will experience stories as they play; characters will reference recent events through their voice lines, and some maps will undergo changes based on the ongoing narrative. For instance, Watchpoint: Gibraltar will see structural modifications following an invasion by Talon’s nefarious forces when the expansion launches.
To celebrate this new chapter, Blizzard is hosting a five-week story event called "Conquest." Players will have the opportunity to choose a side—either Overwatch or Talon—and complete objectives to earn points for their chosen faction, while also unlocking rewards for themselves.
But that’s not all! Overwatch will undergo a significant user interface update for "The Reign of Talon," aiming to better organize information and provide a more immersive experience. This includes the introduction of a 3D hero lobby, which will evolve into a full party lobby by Season 4.
Additionally, new sub-roles will be added to the hero roster, enhancing visual distinction and gameplay dynamics. For instance, a Flanker like Tracer will gain extra health from health packs, while a Medic like Moira will heal herself while providing support to teammates.
In other updates, the recently launched Stadium mode—similar to a MOBA where players develop their characters during gameplay—will receive an icon redesign and a build helper feature aimed at assisting newcomers.
Blizzard has also hinted that fans can look forward to two new core maps over the course of the "Reign of Talon" year, along with the return of post-match accolades and updates to existing heroes, although specifics remain under wraps. Notably, a dedicated version for Switch 2 is set to launch with Season 2, with an expected release date around April.
