Both Perth quarterfinals came down to the wire, with the mixed doubles matches deciding the fate of the teams. This is a relatively rare occurrence, usually only seen in Grand Slams and the Olympics. Coco Gauff and Christian Harrison demonstrated their resilience, coming back from a set down against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari to win a match-tiebreak.
"I think in those moments it's important because literally in tiebreaks every point matters more so than maybe in a three-set format,” Gauff noted, highlighting the high-pressure environment of tiebreaks.
It was the third time in three matches that Team USA got the winning points from Gauff and Harrison.
Switzerland, too, has relied on mixed doubles to secure their spot, with Belinda Bencic and Jakub Paul clinching late wins against Italy and Argentina.
Stan Wawrinka, Switzerland’s captain, has decided to focus on his singles play, opting to let Paul play mixed doubles. "That's the beauty of this event, that we are a team and we can change. We can put different players on the court," Wawrinka said.

Elise Mertens of Belgium is also in top form, with three singles wins and a 1-1 record in mixed doubles. She even defeated two-time major champion Barbora Krejcikova in the quarterfinals.
The head-to-head record between Bencic and Mertens is something to watch.
If it comes down to mixed doubles, both teams have serious talent. Mertens and her partner Veronika Kudermetova won the doubles title at the WTA Finals last November.

Poland, on the other hand, played their quarterfinal in Sydney on Friday night and will go straight into Saturday's match.
This is Poland's fourth straight year as a semifinalist.
The match between Iga Swiatek and Gauff features two of the top players in the world.
"Obviously we've played each other a lot of times," Gauff said of Swiatek.
Taylor Fritz leads the head-to-head with Hubert Hurkacz.
And while Team USA has the undefeated Gauff and Harrison lined up for mixed doubles, Kawa and Zielinski are also undefeated.
